Beach diving can be challenging, particularly when high surf is involved. Even with a camera rig and fins, the ability to have hands free, is invaluable for easier entries and to minimize loss of equipment. Using the basic setup show here, my BCD is prepped for mounting my camera rig.

Camera ring mounted on BCD shoulder straps, leaving hands free. When entering high surf, I normally hold the rig by the left handle and turn my body sideways, to avoid facing a frontal full force wave. If the waves are overhead, I duck under them. My fins are clipped to a D-ring on my waist strap and my mask is tethered, in case it is swept off my face. Timing is everything!

Macro base and "Compact macro port 52" (Sea & Sea), coupled together, allows use of 60mm and 105 lenses without having to change ports.

Through much experimentation and trial-and-error, I found that the extreme inward positioning of my strobes yields the best images for macro photography, particularly if I can shoot my subject with open water behind it. Doing so, with high F-stops (F18 or higher), produces a black background, even in broad daylight, which makes the subject "pop" out in the photograph. It is important to keep the strobes behind the imaginary plane at the front of the port, otherwise, unwanted light will flare or wash out the image. For this reason, this technique do NOT work with wide-angle.

For temperate and warm waters, I cut off the glove tips of thumb and index fingers for greater dexterity handling camera controls.

One computer mounted on my camera rig allows easy viewing and tracking of my tank pressure and other dive data. Another computer is on my left wrist.
