Site of SS Donau sinking, with limpet bombs, in 1945. 532 Jews were imprisoned on the ship, bound for Auschwitz concentration camp. Limpet mines were placed, port side, below the water line and set to explode in open sea. However, departure was delayed and the ship was beached here. Still the Jews were sent to Germany and only 9 survived the Second World War. This link provides some history of the incident:
